What is Yoga?

The word “Yoga” is commonly translated as meaning “union” or “yoke.” This centuries–old art is a therapeutic science promoting harmony and balance in the mind, body and spirit.
Yoga is used to strengthen, tone, lengthen and heal. While the poses directly affect the body as they are practiced in unison with the breath, they positively affect the mind. Yoga may be practiced by anyone. You do not have to be fit or agile to begin yoga. Techniques in yoga are simple, easy to learn and gentle to the body. There are no limitations on physical ability or age.
Yoga is an effective way to protect your health and encourage mindful living. It may also:
- Decrease stress, control blood pressure
- Reduce back/neck tension, headaches
- Increase flexibility
- Tone and strengthen muscles
- Reduce the need to overeat
- Help with focus and concentration
- Create balance
- Improve posture
- Encourage a positive attitude
